Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Inspect and Replace Thermostat
  1. Drain Coolant: Place a drain pan under the radiator and open the drain valve to remove some engine coolant.
  2. Remove Thermostat Housing:
    • Use a socket set to remove the bolts securing the thermostat housing.
    • Carefully detach the housing from the engine.
  3. Remove Old Thermostat:
    • Take out the old thermostat from the housing.
    • Inspect the old thermostat for any signs of damage or sticking.
  4. Install New Thermostat:
    • Place the new thermostat in the housing, ensuring it is oriented correctly (usually with a jiggle valve facing up).
  5. Reattach Thermostat Housing:
    • Clean the mating surfaces to remove old gasket material.
    • Apply a new gasket or sealant if needed, then reinstall the thermostat housing and torque the bolts to the specified value (usually around 15 ft-lbs).
  6. Refill Coolant: Close the drain valve and refill the system with the appropriate coolant type. Bleed the system of air if necessary.
3. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal securely.
4. Check ECT Sensor
  • If the thermostat replacement does not resolve the issue, inspect and replace the engine coolant temperature sensor if needed. Disconnect the wiring harness and remove the sensor using a socket wrench, then install the new sensor and reconnect.
