Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required for the repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Use wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, brake cleaner, torque wrench, caliper tool, and safety goggles.
2. Remove Wheels
  • Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Completely remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels.
3. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads
  • Locate the brake caliper and use a socket to remove the caliper bolts.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor and suspend it using a bungee cord to avoid strain on the brake line.
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket; note their orientation.
  • Inspect the caliper slides and lubricate them if necessary.
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they are positioned correctly.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Rotors (if necessary)
  • Check the rotors for any scoring or warping; if damaged, they need to be replaced.
  • If replacing, remove the caliper bracket by unscrewing the bolts and slide the rotor off the hub.
  • Install the new rotor, making sure it is seated properly against the hub.
  • Reattach the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
5. Reassemble and Torque
  • Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Reinsert and tighten the caliper bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque (usually between 25-35 ft-lbs for BMW).
  • Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
6. Lower the Vehicle and Final Checks
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the jack.
  • Tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specified torque (typically 80-100 ft-lbs).
  • Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the brake pads properly.
