Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting work.
  • Disconnect the battery for safety.
2. Replace Thermostat
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, gasket scraper.
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Drain coolant from the engine by opening the drain plug on the radiator.
    2. Remove the engine cover if applicable.
    3. Locate the thermostat housing; disconnect any hoses connected to it.
    4. Unbolt the thermostat housing and remove the old thermostat.
    5. Clean the mating surfaces on the engine and housing.
    6. Install the new thermostat with a new gasket and secure it in place.
    7. Reconnect hoses and tighten all bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque.
3. Replace Water Pump (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, coolant catch pan.
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Drain the remaining coolant into a catch pan.
    2. Remove the drive belt by loosening the tensioner.
    3. Unbolt the water pump from the engine block.
    4. Remove the old water pump and clean the mounting surface.
    5. Install the new water pump and bolt it in place, following the torque specifications.
    6. Reinstall the drive belt.
4. Refill Coolant
  • Tools Required: Funnel.
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Use a funnel to refill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of BMW-approved coolant and distilled water.
    2. Run the engine with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens and air bubbles are released.
    3. Replace the radiator cap securely.
