💡 Expert Tip

For complex repairs like this, consider taking photos at each step. This helps if you need to reverse a step or consult with a mechanic. Also, keep all removed parts organized - you may need to reference them during reassembly.

Verification

After completing the repair, verify that the issue has been resolved:

  • ✓Test the affected component to ensure it functions correctly
  • ✓Check for any error codes or warning lights
  • ✓Monitor the vehicle for a few days to ensure the issue does not recur

Prevention Tips

To prevent this issue from occurring again:

  • •Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule
  • •Address warning signs early before they develop into major issues
  • •Use quality parts and fluids recommended for your vehicle

Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, socket set, torque wrench, mechanic's stethoscope.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
2. Remove Wheel
  1. Loosen the lug nuts while the vehicle is still on the ground.
  2. Elevate the vehicle with a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  3. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
3. Inspect and Replace Wheel Bearing
  1. Remove brake caliper and rotor:

    • Unbolt the brake caliper and secure it with a bungee cord (do not let it hang by the brake line).
    • Remove the brake rotor.
  2. Remove wheel hub assembly:

    • Unbolt the wheel hub assembly from the knuckle.
    • If necessary, use a hub puller to remove the hub.
  3. Replace bearing:

    • If the bearing is pressed into the hub assembly, it may require a hydraulic press for removal and installation.
    • Install the new bearing into the hub assembly and reassemble in reverse order.
4. Reassemble and Torque
  1. Reattach the hub assembly to the knuckle.
  2. Reinstall the brake rotor and caliper.
  3. Put the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  4. Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 80-100 ft-lbs, check specific values in the service manual).
