Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical shorts.
2. Check and Top-Up Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level; it should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks.
  • If low, add the appropriate type of power steering fluid (usually CHF 11S for BMW).
  • Replace the cap securely.
3. Inspect for Leaks
  • Clean the area around the power steering system.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock while looking for leaks.
  • If any fluid is leaking from hoses, the reservoir, or the steering rack, replace the affected component.
4. Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access.
  • Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mountings.
  • Remove the old steering rack and replace it with a new one, ensuring to torque bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 30-35 Nm).
  • Reattach the steering shaft and reassemble the front end.
5. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • With the engine running, turn the steering wheel fully left and right to purge air from the system.
  • Check fluid levels again and top up if necessary.
