Solution

💡 Expert Tip

For complex repairs like this, consider taking photos at each step. This helps if you need to reverse a step or consult with a mechanic. Also, keep all removed parts organized - you may need to reference them during reassembly.

Verification

After completing the repair, verify that the issue has been resolved:

  • ✓Test the affected component to ensure it functions correctly
  • ✓Check for any error codes or warning lights
  • ✓Monitor the vehicle for a few days to ensure the issue does not recur

Prevention Tips

To prevent this issue from occurring again:

  • •Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule
  • •Address warning signs early before they develop into major issues
  • •Use quality parts and fluids recommended for your vehicle
  • •Keep detailed records of all repairs and maintenance

Tools & Equipment Required

  • •Safely park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • •Wear safety glasses for eye protection during the process.

Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, wheel chocks, lug wrench, socket set, brake caliper tool, C-clamp or brake pad spreader, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and safety glasses.
  • Safely park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Wear safety glasses for eye protection during the process.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use the lug wrench to slightly loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where you will be replacing the brake pads.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels (if working on front brakes) or in front of the front wheels (if working on rear brakes).
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and then secure it with jack stands.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Fully remove the loosened lug nuts and take off the wheel to expose the brake caliper and rotor.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts and use the socket set to remove them.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Do not let it hang by the brake line; use a bungee cord or rope to secure it to the suspension.
5. Replace the Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Use a C-clamp or brake pad spreader to compress the caliper piston back into its housing.
  • Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, ensuring they are seated properly.
6. Reinstall the Brake Caliper
  • Slide the caliper back over the new brake pads and rotor.
  • Reinstall the caliper mounting bolts and torque them to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 25-30 Nm, but confirm with service manual).
7. Reattach the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands using the jack.
  • Once the vehicle is on the ground, use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 120 Nm for most BMW models).
8. Final Check
  • Pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure the brake pads seat correctly against the rotor before driving.
  • Check brake fluid levels and top off if necessary.
