Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the engine is cool to avoid burns and ensure safety.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Inspect and Replace Coolant
  • Tools Required: Socket set, funnel, drain pan
  • Drain the old coolant:
    1. Locate the drain plug on the radiator.
    2. Place a drain pan underneath and remove the drain plug to allow coolant to flow out.
  • Flush the cooling system:
    1. Close the drain plug and fill the system with clean water.
    2. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then turn it off and allow it to cool.
    3. Drain the water again to remove any debris.
  • Add new coolant:
    1. Use a 50/50 mixture of BMW-approved coolant and distilled water.
    2. Fill the coolant reservoir to the recommended level.
3. Inspect and Replace Damaged Components
  • Tools Required: Screwdriver set, pliers
  • Check for damaged hoses:
    1. Inspect all hoses for cracks, bulging, or leaks.
    2. Replace any damaged hoses with OEM parts.
  • Check the water pump:
    1. Inspect for leaks around the water pump shaft.
    2. Replace the water pump if any leaks are found.
4. Inspect and Replace the Thermostat
  • Tools Required: Socket set, gasket scraper
  • Remove the thermostat:
    1. Locate the thermostat housing.
    2. Remove the housing bolts and carefully take out the thermostat.
  • Install a new thermostat:
    1. Clean the mating surfaces of the housing and engine block.
    2. Position the new thermostat and reattach the housing.
