Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid electrical issues.
2. Inspect and Replace Tie Rods
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, tie rod puller
  • Inspect the inner and outer tie rods for excessive play or damage.
  • If replacement is necessary:
    1. Loosen the nut on the outer tie rod end using a socket.
    2. Use a tie rod puller to disconnect the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
    3. Remove the inner tie rod using a socket and a torque wrench.
    4. Install the new inner tie rod, tightening to manufacturer specifications.
    5. Attach the new outer tie rod and secure it with the nut, also using the correct torque.
3. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, steering rack puller (if applicable)
  • If the steering rack is found to be damaged:
    1. Remove the steering column cover and disconnect the intermediate shaft.
    2. Disconnect the power steering lines from the rack and place a drain pan underneath.
    3. Unbolt the steering rack from the vehicle and remove it.
    4. Install the new steering rack, ensuring it's aligned correctly.
    5. Reconnect the power steering lines and the intermediate shaft, securing with the specified torque.
4. Wheel Alignment
  • After replacing components, perform a wheel alignment:
    1. Take the vehicle to a professional alignment shop.
    2. Ensure that all angles (toe, camber, caster) are within manufacturer specifications.
