Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, ratchet extension, spark plug socket, dielectric grease, and anti-seize lubricant.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting the procedure.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent any electrical shorts.
2. Remove Ignition Coils
  • Using the socket set, unscrew the bolts securing the ignition coils and carefully pull them out.
  • Inspect the rubber boots for wear; replace if necessary.
3. Remove Spark Plugs
  • Using a spark plug socket, carefully unscrew each spark plug. Turn counterclockwise until loose.
  • Be cautious of any debris falling into the cylinder head; use a vacuum if necessary.
4. Inspect Spark Plugs
  • Examine each spark plug for signs of wear, such as fouling, corrosion, or excessive wear.
  • Check the electrode gap using a feeler gauge; adjust or replace the spark plugs if necessary.
5. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize lubricant on the threads of the new spark plugs.
  • Install the spark plugs by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to the manufacturer specifications (typically around 22 Nm for BMW spark plugs).
6. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boots.
  • Reinsert the ignition coils into their respective positions and tighten them according to the manufacturer's specifications.
7. Reattach Engine Cover
  • Position the engine cover back on and secure it with the appropriate bolts.
8. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
