Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, fluid catch pan, power steering fluid, torque wrench, flashlight.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and safely secured with jack stands.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues while working.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Place a fluid catch pan under the steering rack to catch any leaking fluid.
  • Remove the front wheels for easier access to the steering rack.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack by removing the retaining bolt.
  • Disconnect the power steering hoses from the steering rack. Use a wrench to loosen the fittings carefully.
  • Remove any brackets or supports securing the steering rack to the vehicle.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounts.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out of its position.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Inspect the seals on the steering rack for wear or damage.
  • If the seals are damaged, remove them using a seal puller or similar tool.
  • Clean the seating area for the new seals.
  • Apply a small amount of power steering fluid to the new seals to lubricate them.
  • Install the new seals, ensuring they are seated properly without twisting.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Reinsert the steering rack into its original position.
  • Secure it with the mounting bolts, tightening them to manufacturer specifications using a torque wrench.
  • Reconnect the steering column to the steering rack and tighten the retaining bolt.
  • Reattach the power steering hoses and ensure they are tightened securely.
5. Refill and Bleed the Steering System
  • Refill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate type of power steering fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
  • Check for leaks around the steering rack and hoses during this process.
