Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Spark plug socket, ratchet wrench, extension, torque wrench, feeler gauge, dielectric grease.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting work on the engine.
2. Remove Ignition Coils
  1. Disconnect the wiring harness from each ignition coil.
  2. Remove the bolts securing the ignition coils using a socket wrench.
  3. Carefully pull out the ignition coils from the spark plug wells.
3. Remove Spark Plugs
  1. Using a spark plug socket, carefully unscrew each spark plug from the cylinder head.
  2. Place the spark plugs in a clean area for inspection.
4. Inspect and Clean
  1. Check each spark plug for signs of wear, such as electrode erosion or carbon deposits.
  2. Clean any carbon buildup using a wire brush or spark plug cleaner.
  3. Measure the spark plug gap with a feeler gauge; adjust if necessary to meet manufacturer specifications.
5. Install New or Reconditioned Spark Plugs
  1. If replacing, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the threads of the new spark plugs to prevent seizing.
  2. Screw in the new or cleaned spark plugs by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  3. Torque the spark plugs to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 18 lb-ft for BMW).
6. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  1. Insert the ignition coils back into their respective wells.
  2. Secure with bolts and reconnect the wiring harness.
7. Replace Engine Cover
  • If an engine cover was removed, reattach it securely.
