Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, wrenches, ball joint separator, torque wrench, grease gun.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface, and the ignition is off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical issues.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access to the suspension components.
3. Remove the Old Ball Joint
  • Locate the ball joint: Identify the upper or lower ball joint depending on which needs replacement.
  • Remove the retaining nut: Use the appropriate socket to remove the nut securing the ball joint to the control arm or steering knuckle.
  • Separate the ball joint: Use a ball joint separator tool to disconnect the ball joint from the knuckle. Be careful not to damage surrounding components.
  • Remove any additional bolts: If the ball joint is bolted to the control arm, remove these bolts as well.
4. Install the New Ball Joint
  • Prepare the new ball joint: Apply grease to the new ball joint fitting if it comes pre-greased or as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Position the new ball joint: Align the new ball joint with the control arm and knuckle, and secure it in place with the retaining bolts.
  • Torque specifications: Use a torque wrench to tighten all nuts and bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque values.
5. Reassemble the Suspension
  • Reattach the wheel onto the hub and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
6. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Check the alignment of the vehicle and adjust if necessary.
