Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery if working on electrical components.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Check the power steering fluid reservoir for level and condition.
  • If fluid is low or dirty, drain the old fluid using a fluid siphon.
  • Refill with the recommended BMW power steering fluid (part number: 83222159681).
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
3. Inspect and Replace CV Joint
  • Lift the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel to access the CV joint.
  • Inspect the CV joint for torn boots or excessive play; if damaged, remove the CV axle:
    • Remove the axle nut using a socket and breaker bar.
    • Detach the lower control arm from the knuckle to free the CV joint.
    • Slide the CV axle out of the transmission and replace with a new CV axle, ensuring proper alignment.
  • Reassemble all components in reverse order and torque the axle nut to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 250 Nm).
4. Check Wheel Bearings
  • After removing the wheel, inspect the wheel bearings for any signs of wear or damage.
  • If the bearings are noisy or have play, remove the hub assembly:
    • Remove any retaining clips and bolts securing the hub.
    • Replace with new wheel bearings and reassemble, ensuring to torque bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
