Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, power steering fluid, steering wheel puller, jack stands, and floor jack.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
  • Raise the vehicle using the floor jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access to the steering components.
2. Remove the Old Steering Rack
  1. Disconnect the Steering Column:

    • Remove the retaining bolts securing the steering column to the steering rack.
    • Use a steering wheel puller if necessary to separate the two components gently.
  2. Detach the Tie Rods:

    • Use a tie rod separator tool to disconnect the tie rods from the steering knuckles.
    • Mark the position of the tie rods for easier alignment during reinstallation.
  3. Remove the Power Steering Lines:

    • Carefully disconnect the power steering fluid lines from the steering rack.
    • Have a container ready to catch any fluid that may leak.
  4. Unbolt the Steering Rack:

    • Remove the mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the vehicle frame.
    • Carefully slide the steering rack out from the vehicle.
3. Install the New Steering Rack
  1. Position the New Rack:

    • Align the new steering rack into place and secure it with the mounting bolts.
    • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 25-30 Nm, but verify with a repair manual).
  2. Reconnect the Power Steering Lines:

    • Attach the power steering fluid lines to the new rack, ensuring they are secured and leak-free.
  3. Reattach the Tie Rods:

    • Install the tie rods back onto the steering knuckles, using the previously marked positions for alignment.
    • Torque the tie rod nuts to the specified value (generally around 35 Nm).
  4. Reconnect the Steering Column:

    • Attach the steering column to the new steering rack and secure it with the retaining bolts.
4. Reassembly and Fluid Check
  1. Reinstall the Front Wheels:

    • Place the front wheels back onto the vehicle and secure them with lug nuts.
    • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
  2. Fill Power Steering Fluid:

    • Add the recommended type of power steering fluid to the reservoir.
    • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge any air from the system.
