Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather required tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool down if it was recently operated.
2. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Power steering fluid, funnel, clean cloth.
  • Check the fluid level through the reservoir. If low, add the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • Inspect the fluid condition; if dark or contaminated, drain and replace with fresh fluid.
    • Locate the drain plug or hose to remove old fluid.
    • Refill with new power steering fluid until the correct level is reached.
3. Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, pulley puller, fluid catch basin.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical issues.
  • Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump pulley.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump using appropriate wrenches.
  • Remove the mounting bolts securing the pump to the engine block.
  • Carefully pull the pump out and replace it with the new unit.
    • Ensure to install any new O-rings or seals to prevent leaks.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines and secure them tightly.
  • Reinstall the drive belt, ensuring proper alignment.
4. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Tools Required: A helper (if possible), funnel.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with new fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to purge air from the system.
  • Check fluid levels and top off as necessary to ensure proper operation.
