Solution

💡 Expert Tip

For complex repairs like this, consider taking photos at each step. This helps if you need to reverse a step or consult with a mechanic. Also, keep all removed parts organized - you may need to reference them during reassembly.

Verification

After completing the repair, verify that the issue has been resolved:

  • ✓Test the affected component to ensure it functions correctly
  • ✓Check for any error codes or warning lights
  • ✓Monitor the vehicle for a few days to ensure the issue does not recur

Prevention Tips

To prevent this issue from occurring again:

  • •Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule
  • •Address warning signs early before they develop into major issues
  • •Use quality parts and fluids recommended for your vehicle
  • •Keep detailed records of all repairs and maintenance

Tools & Equipment Required

  • •If the fluid is dark or contaminated, proceed to flush the brake fluid system:

Parts Required

  • •Brake fluid (DOT 4)

Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.
2. Inspect and Replace Brake Fluid
  • Tools Required: Brake fluid wrench, fluid catch pan.
  • Inspect the brake fluid reservoir; if fluid is low, top it off with the manufacturer-recommended brake fluid (DOT 4 for BMW).
  • If the fluid is dark or contaminated, proceed to flush the brake fluid system:
    1. Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap.
    2. Attach a brake fluid siphon or use a turkey baster to remove old fluid.
    3. Refill with new brake fluid, ensuring the reservoir remains full during bleeding.
3. Bleed the Brake System
  • Tools Required: Brake bleeder kit, wrench for bleeder valves, clear tubing.
  • Start with the brake farthest from the master cylinder (right rear):
    1. Attach the clear tubing to the bleeder valve and place the other end in a catch pan.
    2. Have an assistant pump the brake pedal several times and hold it down.
    3. Open the bleeder valve to release air and fluid until clear fluid flows out.
    4. Close the bleeder valve and instruct your assistant to release the pedal.
    5. Repeat for the left rear, right front, and left front brakes.
  • Monitor the fluid level in the reservoir throughout the process to prevent air from re-entering the system.
4. Inspect and Replace Master Cylinder (if needed)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench.
  • If bleeding does not resolve the issue:
    1. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
    2. Locate the master cylinder; remove the brake lines using the appropriate wrench.
    3. Unbolt the master cylinder from its mounting and remove it.
    4. Install the new master cylinder, torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
    5. Reconnect brake lines and ensure no leaks are present.
