Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Lug wrench
    • Brake pad spreader tool
    • Torque wrench
    • Socket set
    • OBD-II scanner
  • Parts Required:
    • New brake pads
    • Brake rotor (if necessary)
    • Brake cleaner
    • Brake grease
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Always wear safety goggles and gloves.
    • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat, stable surface and securely supported on jack stands.
2. Remove the Wheel
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
  • Raise the vehicle using the jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts and use a socket wrench to remove them.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Do not let it hang by the brake line; support it with a bungee cord or hang it from the suspension.
4. Replace the Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket. Note their orientation for installation.
  • Clean the caliper bracket and rotor with brake cleaner.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the back of the new brake pads to prevent noise.
  • Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old ones.
5. Reassemble the Brake Components
  • Compress the caliper piston using a brake pad spreader tool to make room for the new pads.
  • Reinstall the caliper over the new brake pads and align it with the mounting holes.
  • Secure the caliper by tightening the mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 30-40 Nm for BMW).
6. Reinstall the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground and fully tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque (usually around 120 Nm for BMW).
7. Final Checks
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure proper brake pad seating and restore brake pressure.
  • Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
