my BMW X5 G05 (2019-2024) has a check engine light with code P0420

1. Preparation

• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
• Allow the engine to cool before working on the exhaust system.

2. Inspect and Test Oxygen Sensors

• Remove the upstream (pre-catalytic converter) oxygen sensor using an O2 sensor socket.
• Inspect the sensor for damage; replace if necessary.
• Check the downstream (post-catalytic converter) oxygen sensor in the same manner.
• Use a multimeter to test the voltage output of both sensors (should fluctuate between 0.1V and 0.9V for upstream).

3. Inspect and Replace the Catalytic Converter (if necessary)

• If the catalytic converter is determined to be faulty, proceed to remove it:
  • Loosen and remove the bolts securing the catalytic converter to the exhaust system using a socket set.
  • Carefully detach the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipes.
• Install the new catalytic converter:

  • Secure it with the previously removed bolts, tightening them to the manufacturer's torque specifications (usually around 30-40 ft-lbs, verify with service manual).
