Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools including a socket set, torque wrench, and fluid catch pan.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level; add manufacturer-recommended fluid if low.
  • Inspect the fluid for contamination (milky or dark color indicates issues).
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Remove the serpentine belt:
    • Use a socket wrench to relieve tension on the tensioner pulley.
    • Slide the belt off the power steering pump pulley.
  • Detach the power steering pump:
    • Unbolt the pump from its mounting bracket using the socket set.
    • Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses; use a fluid catch pan to catch any residual fluid.
  • Install the new pump:
    • Connect the hoses to the new pump, ensuring they are secure.
    • Bolt the pump back into the mounting bracket, tightening to manufacturer torque specifications (refer to service manual).
  • Reinstall the serpentine belt:
    • Route the belt according to the belt routing diagram and apply tension using the tensioner.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if needed)
  • Remove the undercarriage cover (if applicable):
    • Unbolt the cover to gain access to the steering rack.
  • Disconnect the steering column:
    • Unbolt and separate the steering shaft from the steering rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack:
    • Remove the mounting bolts securing the rack to the vehicle.
  • Install the new rack:
    • Position the new steering rack in place and secure with bolts, tightening to manufacturer specifications.
  • Reconnect the steering column and ensure all connections are tight.
5. Final Checks
  • Refill the power steering fluid reservoir to the proper level.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed air from the system.
