Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool if it has been running.
2. Locate the Leak
  • Tools Required: UV light (if using dye), fluid catch pan
  • Inspect the power steering reservoir and hoses with the engine off.
  • If leaks are not visible, add UV dye to the power steering fluid and run the engine briefly to circulate it.
  • Re-inspect with a UV light to identify any leaks.
3. Replace Faulty Components

A. Power Steering Hoses

  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrenches
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Remove the clamps securing the hoses to the pump and the steering rack.
  • Replace the damaged hoses with new ones.
  • Reconnect the hoses and secure with clamps.

B. Power Steering Pump

  • Tools Required: Socket set, pulley puller (if needed)
  • Remove the serpentine belt from the power steering pump.
  • Disconnect the fluid lines from the pump.
  • Unbolt the pump from its mounting bracket and remove it.
  • Install the new pump, bolt it in place, and reconnect the fluid lines.
  • Reinstall the serpentine belt.

C. Steering Rack

  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench
  • Drain the power steering fluid from the system.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting.
  • Replace with a new steering rack, ensuring to torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  • Reconnect all components and refill the power steering fluid.
4. Refill and Bleed the System
  • Tools Required: Funnel for fluid
  • Refill the power steering fluid reservoir with the appropriate type of fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to remove air bubbles.
  • Check for leaks and top off fluid as necessary.
