Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for repair.
  • Safety: Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Check and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • If fluid is low, add the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • If fluid is contaminated, proceed to replace the fluid:
    1. Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
    2. Use a turkey baster or siphon to remove old fluid from the reservoir.
    3. Refill with new power steering fluid.
    4. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump
  • If the pump is damaged or noisy:
    1. Remove the serpentine belt using a socket set.
    2. Disconnect the power steering pump lines using a wrench.
    3. Unbolt the power steering pump from its mounting bracket.
    4. Install the new power steering pump and reconnect lines and belt.
    5. Fill the system with power steering fluid and bleed as mentioned above.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack
  • If the steering rack is worn:
    1. Lift the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
    2. Remove the front wheels for easier access.
    3. Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack.
    4. Unbolt the steering rack from its mounts and remove it.
    5. Install the new steering rack, reconnect the steering column, and bolt it to the mounts.
    6. Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
