my Ford F-150’s engine overheats at idle, what is causing this

1. Preparation

• Gather tools and materials needed: OBD-II scanner, coolant, funnel, basic hand tools (sockets, wrenches), thermometer, and a hose for bleeding the cooling system.
• Safety Warning: Allow the engine to cool before opening the radiator or working on the cooling system.

2. Check and Replace Coolant

• Remove the radiator cap carefully.
• Inspect and top up coolant to the proper level using the manufacturer-recommended coolant type.
• If coolant is dirty or contaminated, flush the system (refer to vehicle manual for flushing instructions) and replace with new coolant.

3. Replace Thermostat

• Locate the thermostat housing, typically at the engine end of the upper radiator hose.
• Disconnect the battery.
• Remove the hose clamps and upper hose from the thermostat housing.
• Unbolt the thermostat housing and remove the old thermostat.
• Clean the mating surfaces and install the new thermostat with a new gasket.
