Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, jack and jack stands, lug wrench, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, brake cleaner, and a torque wrench.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and secured with wheel chocks. Use gloves and safety goggles.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the front or rear wheels (depending on the brake pads being replaced).
  • Jack up the vehicle and securely place it on jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts on the back of the caliper.
  • Use the socket set to remove the caliper bolts.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor and support it with a bungee cord or rope to avoid stressing the brake line.
4. Remove Old Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket. Note the orientation and position for installation of new pads.
  • Inspect the caliper bracket and rotor for any damage or excessive wear.
5. Compress the Brake Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. This will create space for the new, thicker brake pads.
  • Ensure the brake fluid reservoir cap is loosened to allow fluid to return.
6. Install New Brake Pads
  • Place the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old pads.
  • Reposition the brake caliper over the new pads and align it with the mounting holes.
7. Reattach the Brake Caliper
  • Reinstall the caliper mounting bolts and tighten them to the manufacturer’s torque specifications (typically around 23-30 lb-ft for most Mustangs).
  • Ensure the caliper is securely mounted without any movement.
8. Reinstall the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands and then tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually 100-150 lb-ft).
