Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Allow the engine to cool if it has been running.
2. Replace the Downstream O2 Sensor
  1. Locate the downstream O2 sensor beneath the vehicle, typically found on the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter.
  2. Use a 22mm O2 sensor socket to unscrew the old sensor from its mounting position.
  3. Inspect the threads in the exhaust for damage; clean if necessary before installation.
  4. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new O2 sensor to ensure easier removal in the future.
  5. Install the new O2 sensor and tighten it to manufacturer specifications (generally 30-40 ft-lbs).
  6. Reconnect the electrical connector securely to the new O2 sensor.
3. Clear the Code
  1. Reconnect the battery.
  2. Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0138 code from the vehicle's computer.
4. Test Drive
  1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  2. Drive the vehicle for at least 10-15 minutes to allow the ECU to recheck the O2 sensor readings.
