Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.
2. Inspect and Top Off Brake Fluid
  • Tools Required: Brake fluid, funnel
  • Check the brake fluid reservoir and add the appropriate type of brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4 as specified in the owner's manual) if low.
3. Check for Leaks
  • Tools Required: Rags, flashlight
  • Inspect brake lines, hoses, calipers, and the master cylinder for any signs of leaks.
  • Clean any excess fluid and replace any damaged components.
4. Brake Booster Inspection
  • Tools Required: None
  • With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times to deplete vacuum. Then, hold the pedal down and start the engine; the pedal should drop slightly. If it does not, the brake booster may be faulty.
5. Master Cylinder Replacement (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Wrench set, brake line wrench, new master cylinder, brake fluid
  • Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder using the brake line wrench.
  • Remove the master cylinder mounting bolts and take out the old master cylinder.
  • Install the new master cylinder and secure it with bolts.
  • Reconnect the brake lines and ensure they are tight to prevent leaks.
6. Brake System Bleeding
  • Tools Required: Brake bleeder kit, assistant
  • Have an assistant pump the brake pedal several times and hold it down.
  • Open the bleeder valve on each brake caliper starting from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder to the closest, allowing air and old fluid to escape.
  • Close the bleeder valve before the assistant releases the brake pedal.
  • Repeat until no air bubbles are seen in the fluid.
