Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, pry bar, steering wheel puller, fluid catch pan.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Lift the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
2. Remove the Steering Gear
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Remove the front wheels for better access.
    2. Disconnect the lower steering column shaft from the steering gear using a socket and wrench.
    3. Detach any power steering lines connected to the steering gear. Use a catch pan to collect any leaking fluid.
    4. Remove the mounting bolts securing the steering gear to the subframe using a socket.
    5. Carefully pull the steering gear out of its mounting location.
3. Install the New Steering Gear
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Position the new steering gear in place and align it with the mounting holes.
    2. Insert and hand-tighten the mounting bolts to secure the steering gear.
    3. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 40-50 ft-lbs).
    4. Reconnect the power steering lines, ensuring they are tightened securely.
    5. Reconnect the lower steering column shaft.
4. Reassemble and Refill
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Reinstall the front wheels and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque (typically around 80-100 ft-lbs).
    2. Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
    3. Refill the power steering fluid reservoir with the appropriate fluid type as specified in the owner's manual.
    4. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed any air from the system.
