Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, socket set, torque wrench, ball joint separator, grease gun (if applicable).
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle.
  • Secure the vehicle on jack stands to ensure stability.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires to prevent rolling.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Loosen the lug nuts with a socket wrench and remove the wheel to access the ball joints.
4. Inspect and Test Ball Joints
  • With the wheel removed, grasp the lower control arm and attempt to move it up and down to check for play.
  • If there is excessive movement, proceed to replace the ball joint.
5. Remove the Ball Joint
  • Remove the retaining nut or bolts securing the ball joint to the control arm and steering knuckle.
  • Use a ball joint separator tool to detach the joint from the steering knuckle if necessary.
6. Install New Ball Joint
  • Position the new ball joint into the control arm and secure it with the retaining nut or bolts.
  • Torque the fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications (refer to service manual for exact torque values).
7. Reassemble
  • Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts to the specified value.
  • Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
