Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, socket set, torque wrench, ball joint separator, hammer, and grease gun.
  • Lift the vehicle using the jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels and ensure the area is clean and organized.
2. Remove the Old Ball Joints
  • Step 1: Disconnect the sway bar link from the control arm if applicable.
  • Step 2: Remove the cotter pin and nut securing the ball joint to the steering knuckle using a socket.
  • Step 3: Use a ball joint separator or hammer to carefully dislodge the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Avoid damaging surrounding components.
  • Step 4: Remove any retaining bolts or nuts securing the ball joint to the control arm.
  • Step 5: Carefully pull the old ball joint out of the control arm.
3. Install the New Ball Joints
  • Step 1: Clean the area where the new ball joint will be installed to ensure a proper fit.
  • Step 2: Insert the new ball joint into the control arm, ensuring it is seated correctly.
  • Step 3: Reinstall the retaining bolts or nuts and tighten them to manufacturer specifications (consult repair manual for torque values).
  • Step 4: Reconnect the ball joint to the steering knuckle and secure it with the nut and a new cotter pin.
  • Step 5: Reattach the sway bar link if it was removed.
4. Reassembly
  • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
  • Torque the wheel lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications.
5. Grease the New Ball Joints
  • Use a grease gun to lubricate the new ball joints as per manufacturer specifications to ensure longevity.
