Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shocks.
  • Allow the engine to cool before beginning work.
2. Inspect and Replace the Oxygen Sensor
  • Tools Required: Oxygen sensor socket, ratchet and extension, torque wrench, safety goggles, gloves.
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Locate the downstream oxygen sensor on the exhaust system.
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the oxygen sensor by pressing the tab and pulling it apart.
    3. Use the oxygen sensor socket to unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Turn counterclockwise to remove.
    4. Apply anti-seize compound (if required) to the threads of the new oxygen sensor to ensure easy installation.
    5. Install the new oxygen sensor by threading it into the exhaust pipe and tightening it to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 30 lb-ft).
    6. Reconnect the electrical connector to the new oxygen sensor.
3. Clear the Codes
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0136 code from the vehicle's computer.
4. Test Drive
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  • Monitor the vehicle for any check engine light re-illumination or abnormal symptoms.
