Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Oil filter wrench
    • Socket set or wrench (for drain plug)
    • Oil catch pan
    • Funnel
    • Rags or paper towels
    • Safety goggles and gloves
  • Parts Required:
    • Engine oil (5W-20 or manufacturer-recommended type)
    • New oil filter
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Always wear safety goggles and gloves to protect against oil splashes.
    • Allow the engine to cool completely before starting the oil change.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • If no lift is available, use a set of ramps to raise the front of the vehicle slightly to access the oil drain plug.
  • Ensure the vehicle is securely positioned on the ramps and engage the parking brake.
3. Drain the Old Oil
  • Place the oil catch pan under the oil drain plug.
  • Using a socket or wrench, loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow the old oil to completely drain into the pan.
  • Once drained, clean the drain plug and replace it, tightening to the manufacturer's torque specification (typically around 20 ft-lbs).
4. Replace the Oil Filter
  • Use the oil filter wrench to loosen and remove the old oil filter; expect some oil to spill out.
  • Before installing the new filter, apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter.
  • Install the new oil filter, tightening by hand until snug, then an additional three-quarters of a turn.
5. Add New Oil
  • Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap.
  • Using a funnel, pour the new engine oil into the oil filler neck. Refer to the owner's manual for the correct oil capacity (usually around 4.4 to 5.0 quarts).
  • Replace the oil filler cap securely.
6. Check for Leaks
  • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, checking for any leaks around the oil filter and drain plug.
  • Turn off the engine and wait a minute before checking the oil level with the dipstick. Add oil if necessary.
