Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid, UV dye (if needed), clean rags.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical short circuits.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
2. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Use a syringe or a fluid pump to remove old fluid from the reservoir.
  • Dispose of the old fluid properly.
3. Remove Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set.
  • Disconnect the battery if not already done.
  • Remove the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a ball joint separator.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering rack using the appropriate socket/wrench.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting points.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out of the vehicle.
4. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Tools Required: Seal puller, replacement seals, grease.
  • Inspect the steering rack for damage and determine if seals need replacement.
  • Use a seal puller to remove old seals from the steering rack.
  • Clean the surface and apply a thin layer of grease to the new seals.
  • Install the new seals carefully to avoid any damage.
5. Reinstall Steering Rack
  • Slide the steering rack back into position.
  • Bolt the steering rack back to its mounting points and torque to manufacturer specifications (refer to service manual for specific torque values).
  • Reconnect the power steering lines and outer tie rod ends.
6. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with new fluid as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to remove any air from the system.
  • Check for any leaks around the newly installed seals and tighten connections if necessary.
