Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan, power steering fluid.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and secure it with wheel chocks.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.
2. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a fluid catch pan under the power steering pump.
  • Loosen the drain bolt on the steering rack and allow the fluid to completely drain into the pan.
3. Remove Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack by removing the retaining bolt.
  • Detach the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a tie rod puller.
  • Remove the bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe and carefully pull the rack out of the vehicle.
4. Replace Seals or Steering Rack
  • If seals are damaged, replace them:
    • Remove old seals using a seal puller.
    • Clean the grooves and install new seals, ensuring they are seated properly.
  • If the steering rack is damaged, replace it with a new or remanufactured unit:
    • Install the new steering rack in reverse order of removal.
    • Tighten all bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque settings.
5. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate type of power steering fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed air from the system.
6. Check for Leaks
  • Inspect all connections and seals for leaks after the fluid has been added.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
