Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, and safety goggles.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels slightly without removing them.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the rear of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the rear wheels by fully unscrewing the lug nuts.
3. Remove Brake Components
  • Remove the caliper bolts using the socket set.
  • Carefully slide the brake caliper off the rotor and suspend it using a bungee cord or hang it securely to avoid stressing the brake line.
  • Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket. Note the orientation for reinstallation.
4. Inspect and Replace Components
  • Inspect the brake pads; if they are worn down to less than 1/8 inch, replace them.
  • Check the rotors for grooves or warping. If they are damaged, replace them or have them resurfaced.
    • Parts Required: New brake pads, and possibly new rotors if damaged.
  • Clean the caliper bracket and rotor with brake cleaner.
5. Reassemble Brake Components
  • If replacing the brake pads, position the new pads into the caliper bracket.
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing to accommodate the new pads.
  • Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and secure it with the caliper bolts.
  • Torque the caliper bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 20-30 ft-lbs, but consult the service manual for exact values).
6. Reinstall Wheels
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and then torque the lug nuts to the specified value (usually 80-100 ft-lbs).
