Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Lug wrench
    • Socket set
    • C-clamp or brake caliper tool
    • Brake cleaner
    • Torque wrench
    • Safety goggles and gloves
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and engaged in Park or Neutral with the parking brake on.
    • Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect from debris and chemicals.
2. Remove Wheel
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is still on the ground.
  • Lift the vehicle using the jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Fully remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
3. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts and remove them using the socket set.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Do not let it hang by the brake line; use a bungee cord to suspend it.
4. Replace Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket. Note how they are positioned for reinstallation.
  • If necessary, use the C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing to accommodate new pads.
  • Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old ones.
5. Reinstall Brake Caliper
  • Slide the caliper back over the new brake pads and rotor.
  • Reinstall and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to manufacturer specifications (typically 20-25 ft-lbs).
6. Reinstall Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands and onto the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically 80-100 ft-lbs).
7. Test Brake Function
  • Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times to ensure the brake pads are seated properly.
  • Check the brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
