Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid, drain pan, new power steering pump, torque wrench, hose clamp pliers.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove the Old Power Steering Pump
  1. Lift the Vehicle: Use a jack and jack stands to safely elevate the front of the vehicle.
  2. Remove the Serpentine Belt:
    • Locate the tensioner pulley and relieve tension by rotating it with a wrench.
    • Slip the serpentine belt off the power steering pump pulley.
  3. Drain Power Steering Fluid:
    • Place a drain pan under the power steering pump.
    • Remove the return line and allow fluid to drain completely.
  4. Disconnect the Power Steering Pump:
    • Unscrew the mounting bolts securing the pump to the engine bracket.
    • Carefully disconnect the high-pressure line using the appropriate wrench, and be prepared for residual fluid.
  5. Remove the Pump:
    • Take the pump out of the engine bay, ensuring no components are damaged in the process.
3. Install the New Power Steering Pump
  1. Position the New Pump:
    • Place the new power steering pump in the same position as the old one.
  2. Reconnect the High-Pressure Line:
    • Tighten the high-pressure line to the specified torque (usually around 15-20 ft-lbs, but refer to service manual for exact specs).
  3. Secure the Pump:
    • Reinstall the mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque.
  4. Reconnect the Return Line:
    • Secure the return line to the pump and ensure all connections are tight.
  5. Reinstall the Serpentine Belt:
    • Route the serpentine belt back over the power steering pump pulley.
    • Ensure the belt is properly aligned with all pulleys.
4. Refill the Power Steering System
  1. Add Power Steering Fluid:
    • Pour the recommended power steering fluid into the reservoir until it reaches the full mark.
  2. Bleed the System:
    • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to remove air bubbles.
    • Check the fluid level again and add more if necessary.
