Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, multimeter, socket set, torque wrench, safety gloves, safety glasses.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety while working on electrical components.
2. Inspect Oxygen Sensor
  • Locate Bank 1 Sensor 1 (usually near the exhaust manifold).
  • Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
  • Visually inspect the sensor and wiring for any signs of wear, corrosion, or damage.
3. Test Oxygen Sensor
  • Set the multimeter to measure DC voltage.
  • Reconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
  • Start the engine and let it reach operating temperature.
  • Probe the signal wire of the oxygen sensor with the multimeter. You should see a fluctuating voltage between 0.1V and 0.9V. If the voltage is consistently low (around 0.1V), the sensor may be faulty.
4. Replace Oxygen Sensor (if needed)
  • If testing indicates a faulty sensor, proceed with replacement.
  • Remove the old oxygen sensor using a socket wrench. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor.
  • Install the new sensor and tighten it to manufacturer specifications (usually around 30 lb-ft).
  • Reconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
5. Clear Codes and Test Drive
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0131 code.
  • Test drive the vehicle for at least 20 minutes to ensure proper operation and monitor for any return of the check engine light.
