Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, power steering fluid, funnel, shop towels, jack and jack stands, safety glasses.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before starting the repair to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove the Serpentine Belt
  • Use a wrench to relieve tension on the serpentine belt tensioner.
  • Carefully slide the belt off the power steering pump pulley.
  • Take note of the belt routing for reinstallation.
3. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a container under the power steering pump to catch any fluid.
  • Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap and disconnect the return line from the pump.
  • Allow fluid to drain completely.
4. Remove the Power Steering Pump
  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the power steering pump.
  • Remove the bolts securing the pump to the bracket using a socket set.
  • Carefully remove the pump from its mounting location.
5. Install New Power Steering Pump
  • Position the new power steering pump in place and secure it with the bolts. Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 16-22 lb-ft).
  • Reconnect the electrical connector.
6. Reconnect the Return Line and Fill Fluid
  • Reattach the return line to the pump and ensure it's secured.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with new power steering fluid using a funnel.
7. Reinstall Serpentine Belt
  • Route the serpentine belt back onto the pulleys according to the belt routing diagram.
  • Ensure the belt is seated properly on all pulleys.
8. Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to purge air from the system.
  • Check fluid levels and add more fluid as necessary.
