why does my Honda Civic make a grinding noise when braking

Solution

1. Preparation

• Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the ignition is off.
• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Secure the vehicle with wheel chocks and jack stands.

2. Remove Wheel

• Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel where the noise is coming from using a socket set.
• Lift the vehicle with a jack and secure it with jack stands.
• Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.

3. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads

• Locate the brake caliper and remove the caliper bolts using a socket set.
• Carefully slide the caliper off the brake pads and hang it using a bungee cord (do not let it dangle from the brake line).
• Check the thickness of the brake pads; if they are worn below 3mm, replace them.
• Remove the old pads and install new pads, ensuring they are properly seated in the caliper bracket.

4. Inspect and Replace Brake Rotors (if needed)

• Check the rotors for wear or scoring; if they appear damaged or below the minimum thickness, replace them.
• To remove the rotor, remove any retaining screws and slide the rotor off the hub.
• Install the new rotor, securing it with screws if applicable.

5. Reassemble Components

• Reinstall the caliper over the new brake pads and torque the caliper bolts to manufacturer specifications.
• Reinstall the wheel and torque the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque value.
• Lower the vehicle back to the ground.
