Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, brake cleaner.
  • Safety Warnings: Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and engage the parking brake before starting work.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the rear of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the rear wheels using the lug wrench.
3. Remove Brake Components
  • For Disc Brakes:

    1. Locate and remove the caliper bolts using the socket set.
    2. Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor and hang it with a bungee cord (do not let it dangle by the brake line).
    3. Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • For Drum Brakes:

    1. Remove the drum by pulling it off the wheel hub; if it’s stuck, gently tap around the drum with a hammer.
    2. Take note of the spring and shoe arrangement for reassembly.
    3. Remove the brake shoes and associated hardware.
4. Inspect and Replace Components
  • Inspect the rotor/drum surface for damage; replace if necessary.
  • If the pads or shoes are worn below the manufacturer’s specifications, replace them with new parts.
  • Clean the caliper bracket and rotor/drum with brake cleaner.
5. Reassemble Brakes
  • For Disc Brakes:

    1. Compress the caliper piston using a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to fit over the new pads.
    2. Install new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
    3. Reattach the caliper over the new pads and tighten the caliper bolts to the manufacturer’s torque specifications.
  • For Drum Brakes:

    1. Install new brake shoes using the original hardware or a new kit.
    2. Reinstall the drum, ensuring it spins freely without dragging.
6. Reinstall Wheels and Lower Vehicle
  • Place the wheels back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle and then torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
