Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety during inspection.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
2. Inspect and Replace Cabin Air Filter
  • Tools Required: Flathead screwdriver, replacement cabin air filter
    • Open the glove compartment and remove any contents.
    • Locate the stops on both sides of the glove compartment and press them in to lower it.
    • Remove the cover for the cabin air filter by unscrewing any screws or clips.
    • Take out the old cabin air filter and inspect for dirt or mold.
    • Replace with a new cabin air filter, ensuring it is oriented correctly (check airflow direction).
    • Reattach the cover and the glove compartment.
3. Clean the Evaporator Core
  • Tools Required: AC cleaner spray, soft brush or cloth
    • Access the evaporator core by removing the HVAC housing as per the service manual.
    • Use an AC cleaner spray to coat the evaporator core and allow it to sit for the recommended time.
    • Gently brush or wipe the evaporator core to remove any mold or debris.
    • Rinse with clean water if required by the cleaner manufacturer's instructions.
4. Clear the AC Drain Tube
  • Tools Required: Compressed air or a flexible cleaning brush
    • Locate the AC drain tube under the vehicle.
    • Use compressed air to blow out any clogs or obstructions.
    • Check for proper drainage by running the AC system and observing for water flow.
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reassemble any components removed during access to the evaporator core and drain tube.
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the vehicle and operate the AC system at maximum setting for 10-15 minutes.
  • Verify that the musty smell has dissipated and that the system is functioning correctly.
