Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, torque wrench, caliper gauge, brake cleaner, shop towels.
  • Safely park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Gather all necessary tools and replacement parts.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front or rear wheel where brake pads are to be inspected.
  • Use the jack to lift the vehicle and securely place jack stands under the vehicle for safety.
  • Remove the wheel to access the brake components.
3. Inspect Brake Pads
  • Use a caliper gauge to measure the thickness of the brake pads.
  • If pads are less than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm), they need replacement.
  • Check for even wear on both inner and outer pads; uneven wear may indicate a caliper issue.
4. Replace Brake Pads (if needed)
  • Tools Required: Brake pad set, brake grease, socket set, torque wrench.
  • Remove the caliper bolts using a socket wrench and carefully slide the caliper off the rotor.
  • Support the caliper using a bungee cord or similar device to avoid strain on the brake line.
  • Remove old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Apply brake grease to the back of the new pads and install them in the caliper bracket.
  • Reinstall the caliper over the new pads and secure it with caliper bolts, tightening to manufacturer specifications using a torque wrench.
5. Reassemble
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even pressure.
