Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface with the engine off.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.
2. Check Power Steering Fluid
  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the cap and check the fluid level; it should be between the minimum and maximum marks.
  • If low, add the recommended type of power steering fluid (consult the owner’s manual).
3. Inspect for Leaks
  • Visually inspect the power steering pump, hoses, and connections for any signs of fluid leakage.
  • Clean any spilled fluid to better identify new leaks during the test drive.
4. Replace Power Steering Pump (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan, and a new power steering pump.
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Remove any components obstructing access to the power steering pump.
  • Disconnect the power steering hoses from the pump, allowing fluid to drain into a catch pan.
  • Remove the mounting bolts of the power steering pump and take out the pump.
  • Install the new power steering pump, ensuring proper alignment.
  • Reconnect the power steering hoses and tighten securely.
  • Reinstall any components removed for access.
5. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack (if necessary)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrenches, steering rack mounting bolts, and fluid catch pan.
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Drain the power steering fluid from the system.
  • Remove the steering column cover and disconnect the universal joint from the steering rack.
  • Remove the mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the chassis.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out and replace with a new unit.
  • Reinstall the new steering rack and reconnect all components in reverse order.
6. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • After repairs, refill the power steering fluid reservoir with the correct fluid type.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed the system of air.
