Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety while working.
2. Check and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Fluid container, funnel
  • Remove the power steering fluid reservoir cap.
  • Inspect fluid color and level. If the fluid is dark or low, proceed to replace it.
  • Using a siphon, remove old fluid from the reservoir.
  • Refill with the manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • Replace the reservoir cap securely.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench, fluid catch basin
  • Disconnect the power steering fluid lines from the pump using a wrench.
  • Remove the mounting bolts securing the pump to the engine block.
  • Take out the old power steering pump.
  • Install the new pump by reversing the removal steps. Torque the mounting bolts to manufacturer specifications (typically around 20-30 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the power steering fluid lines and ensure they are tight.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack and Pinion (if needed)
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, socket set, torque wrench
  • Safely lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the rack and pinion.
  • Remove the tie rod ends from the steering rack.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounting points and remove it.
  • Install the new steering rack by following the removal steps in reverse order. Torque all bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  • Reconnect the tie rod ends and steering column.
5. Final Checks
  • Refill the power steering fluid and bleed the system to remove air bubbles.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock to ensure proper operation.
