Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid electrical shorts.
  • Ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area.
2. Remove the Instrument Cluster
  • Use a socket set to remove any screws securing the dashboard panel.
  • Carefully detach the dashboard panel.
  • Unscrew the instrument cluster retaining screws and gently pull the cluster out.
  • Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the back of the cluster.
3. Inspect and Test the Fuel Gauge
  • Visually inspect the connectors for corrosion or damage; clean as necessary.
  • Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the fuel level sending unit. Refer to the service manual for expected resistance values.
  • If resistance is outside of specifications, replace the fuel level sending unit.
4. Replace the Fuel Level Sending Unit (if applicable)
  • Drain the fuel tank to a safe level (below half full).
  • Disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connectors from the sending unit.
  • Remove the fuel tank access cover (usually beneath the rear seat or in the bed).
  • Unscrew and lift out the old sending unit.
  • Install the new sending unit, ensuring proper sealing.
  • Reconnect fuel lines and electrical connectors.
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reconnect the wiring harnesses to the instrument cluster.
  • Reinstall the instrument cluster and dashboard panel.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the vehicle and check if the fuel gauge operates correctly.
