Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Screwdriver set
    • Hose clamp pliers
    • Flush kit (if available)
  • Ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the battery to avoid any electrical issues.
2. Remove Heater Hoses
  • Locate the heater core inlet and outlet hoses on the engine compartment.
  • Use hose clamp pliers to loosen and remove the clamps from both hoses.
  • Carefully pull the hoses off the heater core fittings; expect some coolant spillage.
3. Flush the Heater Core
  • If using a flush kit:
    • Attach the flush kit to the inlet side of the heater core.
    • Connect a garden hose to the flush kit and turn on the water to flush out debris and clogs.
    • Ensure water flows freely out of the outlet side.
  • If flushing manually:
    • Use a funnel to pour a mixture of water and radiator flush solution into the inlet side while allowing it to flow out of the outlet side.
    • Repeat until clear water flows freely from the outlet.
4. Reinstall Heater Hoses
  • Once the heater core is flushed and clear, reattach the heater hoses to the heater core fittings.
  • Secure the hoses with their clamps, ensuring a snug fit to prevent leaks.
5. Refill Coolant
  • Refill the coolant system with a mixture of the appropriate coolant and distilled water.
  • Bleed the cooling system to remove any air pockets by running the engine with the heater set to maximum until the thermostat opens, and the coolant circulates properly.
6. Test the System
  • Reconnect the battery and start the engine.
  • Allow the engine to reach operating temperature and check for proper heating in the cabin.
  • Monitor for any leaks around the heater core and hoses.
