why does my Ram 1500 DT (2019-Present) fuel gauge not work

Solution

1. Preparation

• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety.
• Allow the vehicle to cool if it has been recently operated.

2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors

• Locate the wiring harness connected to the fuel gauge and sender unit.
• Visually inspect for any signs of wear, fraying, or corrosion.
• Clean any corroded connectors with electrical contact cleaner.
• Reconnect any loose or damaged connections.

3. Test Fuel Level Sending Unit

• Access the fuel tank by removing the rear seat or bed, depending on the configuration.
• Disconnect the fuel level sending unit's electrical connector.
• Use a multimeter to measure resistance across the sending unit terminals.
  • Expected resistance range: approximately 0-90 ohms (empty to full).
• If the resistance is out of specification, replace the fuel level sending unit.

4. Instrument Cluster Check

• Reconnect the fuel level sending unit and restore power to the battery.
• Turn the ignition on (do not start the engine) and check if the fuel gauge needle moves to the full position.
• If the gauge does not respond, further diagnostics on the instrument cluster may be necessary.
