Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, oil catch pan, jack and jack stands, cleaning solvent, shop rags.
  • Lift the rear of the vehicle securely using a jack and jack stands.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and allow it to cool down if recently driven.
2. Drain Differential Fluid
  • Place an oil catch pan under the differential.
  • Remove the drain plug (if equipped) or the lowest bolt on the differential cover to drain the fluid.
  • Allow the fluid to completely drain into the pan.
3. Remove Differential Cover
  • If the leak is from the rear cover, remove the bolts securing the differential cover using a socket.
  • Gently pry the cover away from the housing using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Clean the mating surfaces on the differential housing and the cover with cleaning solvent to remove old gasket material.
4. Replace Seals
  • For leaks at the output shaft, remove the axle shafts by unbolting the differential and sliding the shafts out.
  • Replace the axle seals with new ones, ensuring they are properly seated.
  • If the input seal is leaking, remove the pinion nut and flange to replace the seal.
5. Reassemble Differential
  • Apply a new gasket or RTV sealant to the differential cover.
  • Reattach the differential cover and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 30-40 ft-lbs).
  • Replace the drain plug and ensure it is tight.
6. Refill Differential Fluid
  • Use the recommended differential fluid (check owner’s manual for specifications).
  • Fill through the fill plug until fluid begins to seep from the hole, indicating it’s full.
  • Reinstall the fill plug securely.
