Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  • Tools Required: O2 sensor socket, wrench set, torque wrench.
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors from the upstream (pre-catalytic) and downstream (post-catalytic) oxygen sensors.
  • Using an O2 sensor socket, unscrew the sensors from the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter.
  • Install new oxygen sensors, tightening them to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 30 lb-ft).
  • Reconnect the electrical connectors securely.
3. Examine and Replace the Catalytic Converter
  • Tools Required: Socket set, exhaust pipe cutter or saw, gasket scraper, torque wrench.
  • If oxygen sensors are functioning correctly, proceed to check the catalytic converter.
  • Remove any heat shields securing the catalytic converter, if applicable.
  • Using an exhaust pipe cutter or saw, cut the exhaust pipes on both sides of the catalytic converter.
  • Remove the old catalytic converter. Clean the mating surfaces on the exhaust pipes.
  • Install the new catalytic converter, aligning it properly with the exhaust pipes.
  • Use new gaskets if required and secure with bolts, tightening them to manufacturer's specifications.
4. Reconnect Battery and Clear Codes
  • Reconnect the battery terminals.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code and any other related trouble codes.
  • Start the engine and let it idle to ensure proper operation.
