my Tesla Outback's power steering is making noise, what should I check

1. Preparation

• Gather necessary tools and parts.
• Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
• Disconnect the battery (negative terminal) for safety.

2. Check and Refill Power Steering Fluid

• Locate the power steering fluid reservoir.
• Remove the cap and check the fluid level; add manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid if low.
• Replace the cap securely.

3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump (if needed)

• Remove the Drive Belt:

  • Use a socket set to relieve tension on the belt tensioner.
  • Carefully remove the drive belt from the power steering pump.

• Disconnect Power Steering Pump:

  • Remove the bolts securing the pump using a ratchet and socket.
  • Disconnect the power steering hoses (use a container to catch any spilling fluid).

• Install New Pump:

  • Position the new power steering pump in place.
  • Reconnect the hoses and secure them tightly.
  • Reinstall the mounting bolts and tighten to the manufacturer’s specifications.

4. Bleed the Power Steering System

• With the engine running, turn the steering wheel fully left and right several times to expel air from the system.
• Check fluid level again and add fluid if necessary.
