Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface, and engage the parking brake.

Tools Required:

  • OBD-II scanner
  • Multimeter
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  1. Locate the O2 Sensors: Identify the upstream (pre-catalytic converter) and downstream (post-catalytic converter) oxygen sensors.
  2. Disconnect the Battery: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
  3. Test the O2 Sensors: Use a multimeter to check the voltage output of the O2 sensors. Replace if faulty.
  4. Remove the Old Sensors: Use a socket set to unscrew the old sensors from the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter.
  5. Install New Sensors: Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensors, and install them by hand before tightening with a torque wrench to the manufacturer's specified torque.
3. Inspect and Replace the Catalytic Converter (if needed)
  1. Visual Inspection: Check for physical damage or excessive soot on the catalytic converter.
  2. Remove the Old Converter: Use a socket set to unbolt the catalytic converter from the exhaust system.
  3. Install New Converter: Position the new catalytic converter, securing it with new gaskets and bolts. Torque to the manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Reconnect the Exhaust System: Ensure all exhaust connections are tight and leak-free.
4. Clear Codes and Test
  1. Reconnect Battery: Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Clear Error Codes: Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code.
  3. Test Drive: Drive the vehicle for 20-30 minutes to allow the O2 sensors and catalytic converter to reach operating temperature and monitor for any reoccurrence of the check engine light.
